‘I need something yesterday’– A Traditional Approach to Modern Thinking

Of course the minimum is acceptable – that’s why it’s called the minimum.

I’ve previously shared thoughts on how tricky it can be to work with a fixed budget and fixed scope when the client wishes to adopt agile principles. Using an agile approach known as Minimum Viable Product we’ve recently delivered a series of products to meet the client’s urgent requirements.

Here is an example of how we worked with our client to deliver the MVP and then iterated on it.

Our client needed to sell their products online. Initially, they only needed a simple brochure site and achieve some sort of online presence. We knew the portfolio of products and services to be offered wouldn’t immediately be available but instead would gradually ramp up. So we knew that whilst a powerful e-commerce platform would eventually be required, initially, something more simple would suffice.

The products were new to market and so the budget was modest. The initial solution was a simple site to showcase their products and deliver their brand proposition. Over the next few months, we added additional functionality to support marketing activity and then security measures were taken in preparation for some upcoming e-Commerce functionality. Next, we implemented some very light e-Commerce functionality allowing customers to purchase specialist products and services that weren’t available from the product retailers. Work was already underway to build an entirely new and secure e-Commerce platform with integration with our client’s fulfilment partners. This was rolled out across multiple regions which the previous site could not cope with. We’re now working alongside our client to monitor performance against business KPIs. We’re hoping to make further enhancements to the site using insight captured from Google Analytics and user testing.
